The next blockbuster welterweight title fight is taking shape: Top Rank has secured the broadcast rights for the WBO world title fight between Devin Haney and Keyshawn Davis.
The WBO welterweight world title fight between Devin Haney and challenger Keyshawn Davis is drawing closer. At the official bidding auction, Top Rank won the bid and will host the bout between the two American fighters. With a bid of $8.55 million, the promoter clearly outbid Takeover Promotions—led by Teofimo Lopez—which offered $2.35 million. An agreement between the teams had previously failed to materialize despite several rounds of negotiations, which is why the WBO officially put the fight up for bid.
According to the rules of the world governing body, 75 percent of the purse will go to champion Devin Haney, while Keyshawn Davis, as the mandatory challenger, will receive 25 percent. Top Rank is currently planning the event for October 3. Possible venues include the Barclays Center in New York, the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, and the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Haney Defends His Title for the First Time
For Devin Haney, this will be his first title defense since moving up to welterweight. The former undisputed lightweight world champion was crowned WBO champion in his third weight class late last year with a clear points victory over Brian Norman.
For Keyshawn Davis, too, this fight marks an important step in his career. The former WBO lightweight world champion is making the move to welterweight for the first time. After losing his title due to failing to make weight, the Olympic silver medalist initially enjoyed success in the super lightweight division before now getting the chance to compete for his next world title.
Haney and Davis, two technically skilled and, so far, undefeated American boxers, are set to face off. The matchup is already considered one of the most exciting title fights the welterweight division has to offer this year.
