Super middleweight Jürgen Doberstein appears in the top 15 of the WBA rankings for the first time. On May 17, he will first defend his title as “GBC Champion” in Koblenz.
Jürgen Doberstein will fight his next bout on May 17. The super middleweight will defend his title as champion of the “Global Boxing Council” (GBC) in the Karmelenberghalle in Bassenheim near Koblenz. The 36-year-old, who has fought 38 professional fights to date (32-5-1, 9 knockouts), won this belt on September 28, 2024 with a unanimous points victory over Twaha Kassimu from Tanzania.
Ready for “the next level”
“I have a very clear focus on defending my title,” says Doberstein. “It’s important for me to stay awake and active, which is why I’ve decided to take this fight now.” However, the experienced fighter from Kleinblittersdorf not only wants to defend his title on May 17, but also tackle international challenges. “I’m ready to compete with the best fighters and take my skills to the next level.”
Michael Schultheis brings the current rankings of the World Boxing Association (WBA) into play. “Jürgen Doberstein has made it. He is now ranked 13th in the WBA rankings for the first time,” explains the boxer’s manager. This entry into the rankings should open up new opportunities for the “Doberman”: With his place in the top 15 of the WBA, the German super middleweight theoretically has the chance of being asked for a world championship fight.
Opportunity with other associations
The current WBA “super champion” in the weight class up to 76.203 kilograms is megastar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, while the belt of “interim” world champion is held by American Caleb Plant. However, Doberstein is hoping that after entering the WBA rankings he will also be able to catch the eye of the other renowned world associations WBO, IBF and WBC.
Jürgen Doberstein was born in Kazakhstan in 1989 and moved to Saarland with his family in 1998. He is married, has three children and is considered a down-to-earth person and athlete. In the world of boxing, he finds the support he needs in his family to be successful in the sport. His boxing career began at the age of nine. He made his professional debut on January 26, 2008. Doberstein’s successes include the title of German super middleweight champion as well as winning international awards from the WBF (Intercontinental), IBF (Mediterranean) and WBA (Intercontinental) federations.
“I am convinced that Jürgen will put up a brilliant fight. He is in excellent physical condition,” emphasizes manager Michael Schultheis. However, an opponent for the unyielding Saarland native on May 17 has not yet been determined.
