Boxing Day: Peña meets “Terminator”, Timar meets Fernandez

While super featherweight Angelo Peña contests the main fight at Boxing Day, Gabriela Timar fights for title honors in the minifly. The Swiss boxing highlight takes place on December 26 in Bern.

The main fight of Boxing Day on December 26, 2024 in the Kursaal Arena Bern (Switzerland) promises to be a top-class duel: Angelo Peña, unbeaten local hero and reigning WBO Intercontinental Super Featherweight Champion, will defend his title against Gisu Lee, the current number 91 in the independent world rankings (BoxRec).

Champion Peña is well prepared

The 30-year-old Swiss-Dominican Angelo “The One” Peña (10-0-0, 6 knockouts), has once again prepared at the renowned “Salas Boxing Academy” in Las Vegas (USA) and is looking forward to the next challenge: “I can hardly wait to get back in the ring. I don’t care who the opponent is. The main thing is that he’s strong!” Peña will be coached from the ring corner by young American trainer Henry Deleon, as he was last in September.

Gisu “Terminator” Lee (12-4-0, 5 knockouts), who has lived in Toronto (Canada) for two years, has earned respect with four consecutive knockout victories. His triumph over Cody Kelly underlines his punching power. The 29-year-old former Korean champion not only brings experience, but also explosiveness and toughness.

Timar sets his sights on WBO belt

Boxing Day 2024 in the Kursaal Arena Bern also promises a highlight in women’s boxing: Gabriela Timar from Basel will take on Yoselin Fernandez from Venezuela. This ten-round fight is for the prestigious WBO International mini flyweight title.

With her impressive career, 38-year-old Gabriela Timar (12-2-0) from Box Club Basel has established herself as one of Switzerland’s most successful professional boxers. She was already in the spotlight last year on Boxing Day in Bern when she successfully fought for the IBO Intercontinental title. Trained by Angelo Gallina, the EBU European champion has been preparing intensively for her next title fight and is looking forward to the challenge with confidence: “I’m ready to give it my all. Boxing Day is something special for me and I want to bring the victory home.”

Self-confident opponent

The 26-year-old Yoselin Fernandez (15-5-0) from Caracas also has an impressive palmarès, including winning the Venezuelan title on July 19, 2024. With her height of 155 centimetres and her aggressive style, she is considered a serious opponent. She confidently emphasizes: “I’m traveling to Bern to win.”

“With a win, Gabi could give herself a real chance of winning a WBO World Championship fight,” says promoter Leander Strupler, explaining another important layer of this fight. The WBO World Championship title has been vacant since the retirement of US-American Seniesa Estrada at the end of October and is expected to be re-awarded on December 14 in Karlsruhe. Gabriela Timar is currently ranked seventh in the WBO world rankings.

Boxing Day – tradition and exciting fights

In addition to the main fights, the traditional Boxing Day offers an exciting undercard with other professional fights and Olympic boxing matches. The event is regarded as an annual highlight for Swiss boxing fans and continues the long-standing tradition of presenting top-class boxing in Bern.
