There was excitement in the air in Saarlouis, but in the end it was mainly disbelief that remained. Jürgen Doberstein wanted to crown his world championship evening in the Stadtgartenhalle – instead he lost the Global Boxing Council super middleweight belt by knockout. In round six, after 1:08 minutes, it was over.

The decisive moment came out of nowhere. Pierre Hubert Dibombe caught the Saarland native with a left hook that hit him squarely on the chin. Doberstein went down hard. Although he got up again quickly, his stance looked unsteady. As he staggered briefly into the ropes, referee Mike Wissenbach intervened, checked Doberstein and stopped the fight. Dibombe celebrated, Doberstein had to deal with the evening in the corner.

Perfect evening with a bitter ending

The event had everything that a home fight needs: sold-out stands, a big march-in, show elements, the full package. Doberstein initially remained calm after the stoppage, accepted the verdict and then faced the audience. He spoke of a “shitty day”, apologized for the disappointment – and received applause for exactly that. Still in the ring, he brought a rematch into play. Dibombe was willing to talk and said a rematch was possible.

In sporting terms, the fight was not one-sided for long. Doberstein worked diligently, used his reach and size and kept Dibombe at bay in many phases. However, the Frenchman repeatedly relied on compact defense and quick counterattacks. His strikes came through more clearly in the middle of the fight – especially when Doberstein let his guard down too much. In round six, a clean counterattack was enough for Dibombe to turn everything around.

Doberstein himself struggled with the termination and later explained that he had wanted to continue. Wissenbach saw the situation differently and referred to the protection of the boxer. For Doberstein, it was his first defeat since 2021 and a turning point in his World Championship plans. There are many indications that a rematch against Dibombe will be the obvious next step. Despite everything, Doberstein was combative: he said that he had already proven that he could come back.
