Christian Mbilli celebrated a dominant statement victory on Saturday night: The unbeaten super middleweight prevailed with a brutal knockout victory over the experienced Pole Maciej Sulecki at the Centre Videotron Arena in Quebec City to secure the WBC interim title.

Mbilli (29-0, 24 knockouts) left no doubt about his ambitions right from the start. He attacked Sulecki (33-4, 13 knockouts) with aggressive forward momentum and hit hard jabs to the head and body. After two counter right hands found their target, Mbilli pushed his opponent to the ropes and landed an explosive series of punches to the body, followed by a right uppercut that sent Sulecki to the floor. Although the Pole still managed to shakily get to his feet, referee Michael Griffin had seen enough and stopped the duel after 2:28 minutes of the first round.

“I expected everything,” said Mbilli in the subsequent interview. “I said to myself: he has to pay for it at every opportunity. Every time he leaves a gap, I take advantage of it. Now I’ll go home, talk to my team – and then we’ll see what happens next. I think there will soon be negotiations for the next fight. But one thing is for sure: I’m ready for anyone.”

With the win, Mbilli now moves into the mandatory position for a title fight against the reigning WBC super middleweight champion. The belt is currently held by none other than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who will face Terence Crawford in a mega-fight on September 13.
