The “Charr vs. Pulev” fight for the WBA World Heavyweight Championship will take place on December 7 at the Arena Sophia in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event is being organized by Epic Sports & Entertainment and DAZN has secured the worldwide broadcasting rights. Worldwide? No. The streaming service will not be showing the fight between the two boxing oldies in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and Bulgaria.
Keyword “boxing oldies”: both opponents have one thing in common: they suffered their first defeat against one of the Klitschko brothers. Charr on September 8, 2012 against Vitali, Pulev on November 15, 2014 against Wladimir.
Mahmoud Charr returns as world champion
Mahmoud “Diamond Boy” Charr (40) is the regular WBA champion. He lost the title in 2021 due to inactivity. Since then, he has fought twice, most recently in 2022. In August 2023, the WBA reinstated Charr as champion – the WBA super champion is Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. The reason for Charr’s subsequent enthronement was a court settlement after a two-year legal dispute between the boxer and the association. Charr’s fight record since then stands at 34 wins, 20 of them by knockout, and 4 defeats.
Pulev: A dangerous challenger for Charr
Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev is Charr’s opponent. The 43-year-old Bulgarian is the WBA’s number 7 (neither boxer is in the top 10 in the BOXSPORT rankings ). His fight record: 31 wins, 14 of them by knockout, with 3 defeats. Pulev last defeated Ihor Shevadzutskyi in March. Kubrat Pulev’s coaching team also includes legendary trainer Ulli Wegner. The 82-year-old commented in the BILD newspaper this week: “Slowly he is getting into competition form. Kubrat is getting better and better. I am sure that he will leave the ring as the winner on December 7 in his home town.”
