He is world champion and one of the best boxers in the world. Nevertheless, David Benavidez is still denied the biggest duels of his career. But the longer he is kept waiting, the more dangerous he becomes.

The boy stands in the gym and raises his fists. He is only three years old, but already as focused as a little pro. The sandbag swings slightly, the floor creaks under his steps. Next to him, his dad gives short commands. David reacts immediately: Left. Right. One step back. Forward again. The movements seem surprisingly confident for a child who can barely see over his gloves. It is the beginning of a success story. But not one that will be straightforward.
Anthony David Benavidez was born on December 17, 1996 in Phoenix in the US state of Arizona. His father José is Mexican and his mother Alma comes from Ecuador. Boxing was omnipresent. Little David started training at the age of three. His older brother José Junior would later become WBA interim welterweight champion.
Talent with problems
But talent alone was not enough. As a teenager, David struggled with problems. He was overweight and lacked self-control. As a result, he had to take a break for two years at the age of 13. His amateur career remained manageable: 15 fights, 15 wins.
“Compared to my brother, I was always overlooked,” he said later. But he was sure: “They’ll notice me one day!” And they did – sooner than expected …
