On December 12, Dieter Weinand invited his boxers, friends and companions to a personal farewell party in Dortmund-Hörde. The former national team boxer ended his successful career at the end of last year and hung up his boxing gloves. Weinand, who fought 345 boxing matches himself, was German champion seven times, European junior vice-champion in 1980 and successfully took part in ten prestigious boxing tournaments abroad with the German national team.

“The greatest talent”

“Dieter Weinand is the greatest talent in German amateur boxing” – the statement made at the time by former DABV sports director Heinz Birkle was fully justified. In 1981, Weinand was awarded the “Silver Laurel Leaf” for his services to the sport. He ended his active career in 1989.

Weinand started boxing at the age of eleven. During his career, he fought for ÖSG Viktoria 08 Dortmund, Boxfreunde 29 Hörde, in the 2nd and 1st Bundesliga for BC Gelsenkirchen-Erle, in the 1st Bundesliga for BSK Ahlen and most recently successfully for BC Dortmund. In the meantime, he completed his training as a boxing coach.

In 2020, Weinand visited Dortmunder Boxsport 20/50 (DBS) at a Special Olympics event in the Tremonia School gym. Here he met the special guest of honor, his friend and European amateur boxing champion Ernst Müller, who trained the boys and girls for two hours. DBS chairman Dieter Schumann saw the fire in Weinand’s eyes and asked him to take over the DBS training – he immediately agreed.

Traditional club supported

The Dortmund boxing idol has now trained over 50 boxers and won many titles. Weinand supported the traditional club for 70 months, and his protégés were always enthusiastic and full of praise. The DBS board has made the 64-year-old an honorary member of Dortmund’s oldest boxing club for his services. In the company of his protégés, the DBS awarded Dieter Weinand the “Silver Plate of Honor”. A special thank you also went to his wife Birgit, who supported Dieter’s activities for many years.

“DBS Boxer of the Year 2025” was Jermaine Krause, who was awarded the “Silver Badge of Honor” together with sponsor Daniel Weinand.
