It is not the first time that the man who was sometimes regarded as the “face of US boxing” has been in trouble with the law. Despite this, Gervonta Davis was still a big star at a time when the sport was in crisis. 30 wins and one draw in 31 fights, 28 knockouts – the 1.65-metre-tall lightweight proved to be a knockout machine and fan favorite despite a mixed record against his opponents. Planned fights against top boxers such as Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez or Shakur Stevenson did not materialize, the Grudge Match against his long-time rival Ryan Garcia, which he won with a knockout in the seventh, was a long time coming.
Charges without end
The dark side of “Tank”, the problem child from Baltimore who found his destiny in boxing, was sponsored by superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. and has been fighting professionally since 2013, was already known at the time of his victory against Garcia. The boxing bad boy had almost collected more charges than belts in his career.
In 2017, he allegedly punched a childhood friend and in 2018 started a fight with a man in Washington. In 2021, he caused a multiple-injury accident with his Lamborghini and committed a hit-and-run, for which he was sentenced to 44 days in jail in 2023, among other things, after violating the terms of his original sentence of 90 days of house arrest. …
