Oleksandr Usyk justifies the Verhoeven fight and ignores calls for Kabayel – focus is on the mega-event in Egypt.

Oleksandr Usyk continues to cause discussion: The heavyweight champ will defend his WBC title against kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven on May 23 – and has now explained his motives. “For once, I just want to do what I want,” said the 39-year-old Ukrainian at a press conference. Many fans and experts had criticized the scheduling, as Agit Kabayel is an official mandatory challenger.
Verhoeven, meanwhile, announced his intention to spring a surprise. The long-time kickboxing world champion sees himself as a “different puzzle” for Usyk: “I bring different angles, different movements.” At around 125 kilograms, the Dutchman also brings significantly more weight into the ring than the technically adept Ukrainian. Usyk was unimpressed by this. The former Undisputed Champion has already defeated larger opponents such as Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. “Size doesn’t matter,” said Usyk, who is confident in his preparation.
The venue also attracts additional attention: the pyramids of Giza form the spectacular backdrop for the unequal duel. In sporting terms, Usyk remains the clear favorite – but Verhoeven is counting on surprise and physical presence.
