Two fighters who embody aggressive boxing: Rarely has there been a unification showdown between two such highly decorated champions as the bout between Mikaela Mayer and Chantelle Cameron.
The rival world champions in the super welterweight division (up to 69.85 kilograms) will face off on August 29 in Birmingham. The WBA, WBC, and WBO world championship belts are on the line. Given Mayer and Cameron’s aggressive fighting styles, quite a few observers see this British-American clash as having the potential to be the “Fight of the Year” in women’s boxing. Who has the edge? Both boxers have been among the world’s best in women’s boxing for years and have a combined total of 20 world title fights (Cameron with 11, Mayer with nine). Mayer has earned world championship honors in the super featherweight, welterweight, and light middleweight divisions, while Cameron once reigned as the undisputed champion in the light welterweight division and has also won recognized world titles in the lightweight and, most recently, light middleweight divisions. In May 2023, the 35-year-old Englishwoman became the first to defeat superstar Katie Taylor—and she did so at the “proud daughter of Ireland’s” highly publicized “Homecoming” event in Dublin.
