Adam Deines is the new WBO European light heavyweight champion. The German boxer celebrated an impressive fifth-round knockout victory over Mateusz Tryc last night at the Sparkassen-Eisdom in Halle an der Saale. Deines (26-4-1, 15 knockouts) caught Tryc (16-4, 8 knockouts) on the ring ropes with a left jab to the chin. The Pole was visibly stricken and began to dodge backwards. Deines immediately followed up, cleverly cutting off the ring and covering his opponent with a series of punches before Tryc went down.

Tryc got back to his feet, but the referee stopped the fight after the second knockdown of the evening, after the Pole had already been down in the first round. Deines replaced the injured Artur Reis in the main event at short notice and will now move into the top 15 of the WBO world rankings thanks to his victory.

On the undercard, Julian Vogel won a hard-fought rematch against Sami Ahmeti to defend his WBO Youth welterweight title. Vogel (18-0-2, 10 knockouts) prevailed in a close duel that could just as easily have ended in a draw. Ahmeti (10-1-1, 5 knockouts) had already split with Vogel last November in a majority draw. Both boxers went into yesterday’s rematch of the SES Boxing Gala, which was broadcast live on MDR, on the back of interim victories. This time the judges scored clearly in Vogel’s favor. All three judges saw the German in front – with scores of 97-93, 98-92 and 97-93.
