After his big World Championship triumph against Gilberto Ramirez on “Cinco de Mayo” in Las Vegas, David “The Monster” Benavidez faced the press. “I love each and every one of you. I’m very happy,” shouted the new cruiserweight champion(WBO and WBA Super). The members of the press then chanted enthusiastically: “Monster! Monster!” David Benavidez afterwards about …

… his strengths in battle:

I knew I couldn’t just overpower him because I was moving up to the 200-pound class for the first time. So I knew I had to use the gifts God gave me: speed, power, agility, punch selection and boxing IQ. That’s exactly what I did.

… Gilberto Ramirez:

I just wanted to thank him for this opportunity. I love “Zurdo” Ramirez. You know, we grew up together. We trained together. I prepared him for his world championship fights. He prepared me for my world championship fights. So I just want to say that I love Zurdo. But, you know, in here, it is what it is: there’s only one monster.

… a duel against Canelo Alvarez:

I feel good and I just want to give the fans what they want to see. I see Canelo is here in the building. Let me just ask the fans this: do you want to see Canelo vs. David Benavidez? We can’t leave this fight on the table. I have respect for Canelo. He’s a great champion. I’m a great champion too. Let’s do it!

… a return to the semi-heavy:

I’m still world champion at light heavyweight. I’m world champion at light heavyweight and cruiserweight. So if they want to fight me at light heavyweight, that’s where we’ll do it. Bivol is at the top of my list. He’s a great fighter and a great champion, but I’m a good champion too. I just want to put myself to the test in every single fight.
