Doping scandal surrounding Jaime Munguía: The Mexican tested positive for testosterone after the revenge victory against Surace.

The rematch against Bruno Surace was supposed to be the big liberation for Jaime Munguía – now the Mexican is facing a serious setback. After his unanimous points victory on May 4 in Riyadh, it became known: Munguía tested positive for a banned substance. As reported by boxingscene and The Ring, a doping test revealed a positive result for exogenous testosterone, taken by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA). Munguía now has ten days to apply for the B sample to be analyzed. If the result is confirmed, he not only faces a ban and a fine – his victory over Surace could also be converted into a no contest, which would restore Surace’s previously unbeaten record.
The rematch had been eagerly awaited after Munguía’s surprising knockout defeat in December 2024. In Riyadh, the 28-year-old looked much more stable with new coach Eddy Reynoso. However, his confidently boxed result is now overshadowed by a dark shadow. After his world super welterweight title (WBO, 2018-2019), this incident could have a lasting negative impact on his career. His record already no longer reads flawlessly. Munguia suffered his first two career defeats in his last four fights. One of the two victories is now also highly controversial. The British Boxing Board of Control, under whose supervision the fight took place, will shortly be looking into the case.
