Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez has successfully defended his IBF super featherweight world title. In front of a home crowd at the Centro de Usos Múltiples in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, the Mexican clearly prevailed on points against Puerto Rican Christopher Diaz. The fight, which was promoted by Matchroom and broadcast live on DAZN, confirmed Nunez’ status as one of the most dangerous punchers in the weight class.

Nunez (29-1, 27 knockouts) was making his first title defense since winning the IBF red and gold belts by unanimous decision over Masanori Rikiishi in Yokohama about three months ago. The champion dominated from the start against Diaz (30-6, 19 knockouts). He proved his punching power in the seventh round in particular, when he sent his opponent to the floor twice. In the end, the judges Jose Cobian and Joel Elizondo scored the fight 117-109, while Daniel Sandoval saw 116-110 – a clear victory for the local hero. “Mexico against Puerto Rico is always a war,” explained Nunez in the ring interview on DAZN. “Christopher is a warrior and that’s what he showed today. The fans went home happy and that’s the most important thing.”

It was Nunez’s 19th win in a row since his only defeat against Hiram Gallardo in June 2018, while Diaz suffered his third defeat in a world title fight, having already lost to Masayuki Ito in 2018 and Emanuel Navarrete in the twelfth round in 2021.
