The officially announced fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua on December 11 is getting an upgrade. The two rivals will officially fight for the WBA “Super” heavyweight title at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. This was reported by the online portal BoxingScene, which cites “The Ring” as its source.
In the World Boxing Association (WBA) rankings, Fury is currently ranked No. 2, while Joshua is ranked No. 3. Jarrell Miller is listed as the No. 1 contender, while Murat Gassiev’s “World Champion” belt is once again considered a secondary title by the world governing body in the heavyweight division.
Big Money Fight—for the WBA, Too
The fight between Joshua and Fury will be a “big money fight,” with both fighters set to pocket substantial purses. Now that the WBA has decided to reintroduce the “Super” belt, a portion of the revenue from the mega-fight will go to the association as a licensing fee.
In June, former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk decided to relinquish his titles, including the WBA “Super” belt. As a result, the world governing body temporarily suspended the heavyweight title. Now it’s a reversal: Soon there will be two WBA heavyweight titleholders again—provided the Joshua vs. Fury fight doesn’t end in a draw.
In addition, Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, told “TalkSport” that the contracts currently do not include a clause for a rematch. However, it remains to be seen whether this will change.
