Despite the WBC’s ruling against Agit Kabayel, Usyk is apparently considering several options—including the possibility of retiring.
Oleksandr Usyk may have already fought his last bout. His advisor, Sergey Lapin, has now raised this possibility. The 39-year-old Ukrainian last stepped into the ring in May against Rico Verhoeven and won after eleven rounds. Afterward, the WBC made it clear that Usyk’s next fight should be a title defense against interim world champion Agit Kabayel.
But it remains to be seen whether this will actually happen. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman set a deadline of June 30 for the teams to agree on the mandatory bout. However, reports from Usyk’s camp now suggest that, in addition to Kabayel, other options are being considered—including a possible retirement. “Agit Kabayel is an excellent fighter, a worthy champion, and a man we respect,” said Lapin. At the same time, he made it clear that a fight of this magnitude would not come about through public pressure. “At this stage, it’s no longer about what Usyk owes anyone. The question is what kind of event can be put together.”
Lapin emphasized that, above all, the economic conditions would have to be right for a fight against Kabayel. “If the numbers and the opportunity make sense for everyone, then anything is possible. We’re open to serious business, not just hype.” Following Usyk’s grueling bout against Verhoeven, there has been increased discussion about his physical condition. Lapin has deliberately left open whether the two-time undisputed champion’s career will continue. “It’s possible that the fans have already seen him in the ring for the last time. Or maybe there’s another chapter to come.” According to Lapin, a decision is expected to be made later this week.
