On this Day: The last coronation of Ali

46 years ago today, boxing legend Muhammad Ali was crowned world champion for the third and final time in the legendary “Battle of New Orleans”.

Barely seven months after Muhammad Ali’s first surprising defeat to Leon Spinks, the two fought a rematch in New Orleans (USA) on September 15, 1978. In this duel, the visibly better-trained Ali wins a world title for the third and final time with a points victory – and beats Floyd Patterson’s previous record. In addition to the WBA World Heavyweight Championship belt, he also regains the “Ring” title in this fight.
