The upcoming women’s boxing match between Mary Spencer and Mikaela Mayer is taking on a new dimension. The duel on Thursday evening at the Casino de Montréal will now be held as a world championship unification fight for three titles. Canadian WBA world champion Mary Spencer (10-2, 6 knockouts) defends her belt, while the WBC and WBO titles recently vacated by retired boxing legend Cecilia Braekhus are also on the line. This means that the main fight will be for supremacy in the half-middleweight division.

Spencer, a former Olympian (London 2012), is contesting her second title defense after defeating Naomi Mannes on points last year to become the regular WBA World Champion. Her opponent Mikaela Mayer (USA) – also an Olympian and reigning WBO Welterweight World Champion – will move up a weight class for this challenge. Mayer was originally scheduled for a unification fight with Lauren Price, but this did not materialize.

The event is promoted by Eye of the Tiger Management and supported by Top Rank. On the undercard is another Canadian highlight: Wilkens Mathieu (14-0, 10 knockouts) meets Shakeel Phinn (27-3-2, 17 knockouts) in a super middleweight bout.
