Mikaela Mayer has been crowned triple world champion in Montreal. The US-American defeated Canadian Mary Spencer unanimously on points (100:90, 98:92, 98:92) at the Montreal Casino on Thursday to unify the WBA, WBC and WBO half-middleweight titles. Mayer, who is already WBO welterweight world champion, is now champion in the third weight class – another milestone in her impressive career.

Although Spencer was considered the physically stronger boxer beforehand, Mayer dominated the fight for long stretches. With a precise jab, aggressive forward movement and hard combinations, she controlled the action right from the start. Mayer repeatedly landed heavy punches, especially in the final rounds, while Spencer was increasingly forced onto the defensive. “I knew I had to get under her long arms to place my hooks,” explained Mayer after the fight. “We practiced exactly that – in the end I was able to hit her clearly with right and left hooks.”

With the clear victory, the 35-year-old makes an impressive comeback after two difficult years and opens up new opportunities for herself: “I now have options – I can fight for the undisputed crown at 147 pounds or defend my titles at 154.”
