Vergil Ortiz and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions have reached an out-of-court settlement, thereby ending the legal dispute.
Vergil Ortiz’s manager, Rick Mirigian, and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions were set to face off in court this week over a protracted dispute regarding a long-term promotional contract. However, both parties have now agreed to settle the dispute out of court.
Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) had sparked the legal dispute after filing a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions to get out of his contract. The undefeated super welterweight believed that the promotion had breached the contract. However, Golden Boy was able to obtain a preliminary injunction against Ortiz and his team after they attempted to organize a fight against super welterweight rival Jaron Ennis without the involvement of their controversial promoter.
“Our relationship with Vergil has spanned more than a decade, and we’re proud to have played a part in his development into one of the best boxers in the sport,” Oscar De La Hoya said in a press release. “We look forward to continuing our partnership and working with Vergil Jr., Rick Mirigian, and the entire Ortiz team to bring the biggest fights to boxing fans.”
Ortiz added: “I’m very grateful that Golden Boy and I were able to reach an agreement and resolve all outstanding issues. I’m looking forward to moving forward and making the biggest fights possible—including the bout against Ennis. My sole focus is on delivering unforgettable fights to the fans, and I know that my team and I will achieve that together.”
