The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has officially requested the undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 knockouts) to provide a detailed explanation of his reported back injury. The reason for this is a video that circulated on social media on Friday and shows the Ukrainian dancing and playing soccer – activities that are said not to be in line with the doctor’s recommendations.

Usyk had previously requested a 90-day extension from the WBO after being ordered by the organization on July 23 to enter negotiations with New Zealander Joseph Parker (36-3, 14 knockouts) for a mandatory fight. According to boxingscene.com, the WBO was prepared to grant this request – until the video in question emerged. Now a medical reassessment is to take place by Monday at the latest.

WBO Championship Committee Chairman Luis Batista Salas stated in a letter to Usyk’s attorney John Hornewer: “These actions put the Championship Committee in a difficult position, as the arguments made in the petition and the medical documentation submitted are called into question by these new developments. The recordings appear to contradict the medical recommendations.”

Usyk, who defeated Daniel Dubois at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 19 to become undisputed world champion for the third time, is now under pressure. Parker, who is currently on a six-fight winning streak and most recently spectacularly knocked out Martin Bakole in the second round in February, is waiting for his chance. The coming days will be decisive as to whether Usyk keeps his extension – or whether he will soon have to face Joseph Parker in a mandatory duel.
