Things get serious for WBF world champion Sarah Liegmann on Saturday evening: the 23-year-old will step into the ring in Meckenheim for her most important fight to date – and for the first time in front of a home crowd. In the Jungholzhalle, she will defend her featherweight title against her long-time sparring partner Liliana Martinez from the Dominican Republic.

“I’m absolutely pain-free and more ready than ever,” said the boxer before the fight. After a difficult phase last year – including an injury-related fight withdrawal – the Rheinbach native has fought her way back impressively. In Florida, she completed seven weeks of preparation with intensive sparring, including an impressive knockout victory against Marjone Guzmann in the Dominican Republic.

With an unblemished record of eleven wins in eleven fights, Liegmann is still unbeaten – but the challenge is great. Martinez brings the experience of 45 professional fights to the ring. Liegmann is nevertheless focused: “A moment of inattention can cost everything in the ring.” In addition to the sporting challenge, the emotional component also plays a role. “It’s the first time I’m boxing in my home country. That’s both a curse and a blessing,” says Liegmann. The pressure is great – but the motivation is greater.
