The WBC has decided: Badou Jack must defend his cruiserweight world title, which was held until recently by Noel Mikaelan, against mandatory challenger Ryan Rozicki.

The two camps have until February 4 to reach an agreement. If no deal is reached, a purse bid will be held and the fight must take place within 60 days. Jack (28-3-3, 17 knockouts), now 41, won his title in Riyadh in 2023 with an impressive knockout win over Ilunga Makabu. The Swede, who lives in Dubai, has not been active since then. He was originally planning a move to bridgerweight, but now faces a mandatory defense against Rozicki. The 29-year-old Canadian Rozicki (20-1-1, 19 knockouts) has recommended himself with strong performances and is determined to capture the belt. His team is proposing Canada as the venue, but is open to negotiations.
Rozicki’s promoter Dan Otter sees clear advantages for his protégé: “Jack is experienced, but over 40 and inactive for a long time. Ryan is young, strong and ready.” Jack, on the other hand, emphasizes that he is ready to get back in the ring at any time despite boxing politics. For Jack, this fight could be an important step before a possible title unification with IBF champion Jai Opetaia. Rozicki, on the other hand, is hoping to continue his winning streak and bring the WBC title back to Canada.
A blow to the neck for Mikaelian
Noel Mikaelian, who until recently held the WBC cruiserweight title, was declared “Champion in Recess” after failing to make his mandatory defense against Ryan Rozicki in time. The German-born Armenian won the vacant WBC title in November 2023 and impressed with his strong technique and punching power. Mikaelian had originally hoped to defend his title against Badou Jack in a major clash, but due to the delays the association decided to temporarily remove him from active title action. Whether and when he will be able to return to the title fight remains uncertain for the time being.
