When the bell rings on November 29 at the luxurious Meliá Internacional Varadero, boxing fans can once again expect an evening in a class of its own. AGON Sports is presenting three officially sanctioned World Boxing Association (WBA ) title fights.

After the historic premiere in April, when AGON brought professional boxing back to Cuban soil for the first time in decades, now comes the challenging sequel – with a line-up that combines international class, Olympic level and Caribbean passion.

Statement towards the world championship fight?

The main fight of the evening features Cuban crowd favorite Erislandy Álvarez (5-0). He will face Mexico’s Rogelio Jiménez (14-2-1) in the WBA Continental Latin Americas title fight. In his third title fight, Erislandy Álvarez, Olympic champion in 2024 and currently ranked 14th in the WBA world rankings, will once again step into the ring in his home town of Varadero. His opponent, the experienced Rogelio Jiménez, is regarded as a technically strong counter-puncher and wants to make it difficult for the rising Cuban star to reach the top of the world rankings. The 25-year-old Álvarez, who is unbeaten in his still young professional career, wants to make a clear statement on his way to a possible world championship fight in 2026 with a dominant performance in front of his home crowd.

Three-time Olympic bronze medalist and three-time amateur world champion Lázaro Álvarez (9-0) will face Raúl Hernández (15-3-2) in the second main event of the evening. Álvarez faces his toughest test to date in Varadero. His Mexican opponent for the WBA Continental Americas title brings experience, toughness and ring intelligence. For Álvarez, it is not just about a successful title defense, but also about confirming his status as one of the greatest hopes of Cuban professional boxing. A victory would bring him a decisive step closer to the top of the world rankings. He is currently ranked #9 in the WBA’s lightweight rankings.

Beacon of hope in the ring

Moussa Gholam (24-1), another of the AGON boxing stable’s hopefuls, will step into the ring in Cuba – for the second time! The Moroccan-born fighter, who lives in Spain, wants to consolidate his world ranking against Ramiro Cesena (19-2) and stay in contention. The super featherweight wants to defend his WBA Continental America Gold title after his impressive victory in April. And thus continue to work his way up the rankings of the world associations. He is currently ranked #10 by the WBA and #9 by the WBC.

With this fight card, AGON Sports is once again underlining its claim to unite top international class with Cuban boxing tradition. “Our mission is to establish professional boxing in Cuba in the long term with real fights, big names and sporting quality,” says AGON promoter Ingo Volckmann.

After the historic premiere in April, November 29, 2025 will once again be an evening that writes boxing history.
