The driver of former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been charged in court following a fatal traffic accident in Nigeria. As the BBC reports, two members of Joshua’s entourage were killed in the crash – a tragic event that has rocked the boxing world. Joshua (29-4, 26 knockouts) was on a road considered particularly dangerous in Ogun State, near Lagos. The vehicle crashed into a stationary truck on Monday. Personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami died in the accident. The former world champion himself was taken to hospital and escaped with minor injuries.

According to the BBC, the prosecution brought four charges against the driver, Kayode: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid license. The defendant was released on bail of 5,000,000 Naira (about 2,578 pounds) but is subject to conditions. The trial was adjourned to January 20. Joshua was on his way to spend the New Year holidays with his family. This just days after his dominant knockout victory in round six over American social media star Jake Paul on December 19.

Numerous messages of condolence were received on the boxing scene. Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “Rest in peace, Latz and Sina. Your energy, loyalty and so many other great qualities will be sorely missed. We pray for strength and support for all family, friends and of course AJ during this extremely difficult time.” A tragic blow away from the ring that overshadows Anthony Joshua’s sporting success and unites the boxing world in mourning.
