It has often been imitated, copied more badly than well. But the BOXSPORT vote for “Germany’s Boxer of the Year” is and remains what it is: a one-off with a special status! Because only BOXSPORT lets the fans decide who the most popular boxers of the year are. The traditional voting is supported by an expert jury: whether Henry Maske, Ulli Wegner, Axel Schulz or Regina Halmich – German boxing idols like these are or were part of our voting panel.
Launched in 1967 purely as a vote on the best amateur boxers in Germany, over the years the professionals have increasingly moved to the fore. To this day, the record winner of the BOXSPORT poll is Arthur Abraham: the former world champion and protégé of legendary trainer Ulli Wegner has been “Boxer of the Year” seven times. Only surpassed by whom? Ulli Wegner himself, of course, who won the “Trainer of the Year” category an incredible 17 times.
Admittedly, that was a few years ago. But the excitement of the election and the pride of the athletes when they receive the “Boxer of the Year” award – it’s just the same today as it was back then! The BOXSPORT “Boxer of the Year” election has lost none of its fascination, as current winners such as Agit Kabayel and Nina Meinke see it. That’s why it’s time to dedicate a BOXSPORT special to the legend. We hope you enjoy reading it!
