Gervonta Davis is not fazed. At a press conference in New York, the WBA lightweight world champion made it clear that he is not taking any notice of his fans’ criticism – even though many had wanted a rematch against Lamont Roach. Instead, “Tank” will step into the ring on November 14 against YouTuber and cruiserweight Jake Paul – live worldwide on Netflix.

“Why should I care what people say?” asked Davis. “Fans change their minds all the time. I do my thing.” Davis’ last fight against Roach ended in a controversial draw. Many fans believe “Tank” would have been awarded the loss had the referee correctly scored a knockdown in round nine.

Davis had initially drawn his rematch clause, but then postponed the rematch twice – and finally opted for the more spectacular clash with Paul. Davis confidently brushes off criticism of this decision: “If people are up too long, they want to see you fall. That was the case with Floyd – and now it’s the case with me.”
