Emanuel Steward – voice, visionary, champion maker

Today would have been boxing legend Emanuel Steward’s birthday – the man who made Klitschko and Lewis champions and the Kronk Gym world-famous.

Today, July 7, would have been Emanuel Steward’s birthday. The legendary US boxing trainer, born in 1944 in Bottom Creek, West Virginia, shaped international boxing for decades – both in and out of the ring.

Steward was not only a brilliant tactician in the corner, but also a mentor with an exceptional feel for talent. 94 victories in 97 amateur fights laid the foundation, but he never competed as a professional. Instead, he revolutionized boxing as a trainer – most notably at the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit, where he shaped future champions. His influence was deep and far-reaching.

His partnerships with Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko, both of whom he guided to the heavyweight throne, remain unforgotten. But boxers such as Evander Holyfield, Oscar de la Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez and Graciano Rocchigiani also benefited from his expertise. Steward’s signature: intelligent boxing with discipline, technique – and timing.

Emanuel Steward passed away in 2012 at the age of 68. His legacy lives on – in Hall of Fame tributes, in old fights, in the careers of those who were made great by him. On this day, we remember one of the greatest trainers the sport has ever known. Thank you, Emanuel Steward.
