December 22, 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of Fritz Sdunek’s death. Born in Lüssow, he left his mark on boxing for decades. As a coach, he led numerous athletes to world championship titles. His protégés included Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, Felix Sturm and Dariusz Michalczewski. He coached a total of twelve world champions and became a boxing legend.
Fritz Sdunek: A life for boxing
Sdunek began his coaching career in 1972 at SC Traktor Schwerin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he moved to the West. He initially worked for Bayer Leverkusen and moved to Universum Boxstall in 1994. There he trained boxing greats such as the Klitschko brothers and Michalczewski. With passion, discipline and tactical skill, he led his athletes to the top.
Vitali Klitschko: “He was more than a trainer”
Vitali Klitschko, who was trained by Sdunek for over 16 years, describes him as a close confidant. “Fritz was much more than just a trainer for me. We had a very close personal relationship.” Felix Sturm and Dariusz Michalczewski also paid tribute to Sdunek’s influence. Michalczewski called him a “father figure”.
Seriously ill and still active in the ring
In 2007, Sdunek was diagnosed with skin cancer. But he fought his way back and remained loyal to boxing. Even after his official retirement as a trainer in 2010, he continued to coach individual boxers. “The heart of a boxer beats in my chest,” he said shortly before his death. In December 2014, Sdunek succumbed to a heart attack.
Fritz Sdunek: an icon of German boxing
Fritz Sdunek remains unforgotten. Since 2019, the “Fritz Sdunek Memorial” boxing event named after Sdunek has been held every September in Zinnowitz. His influence on boxing, his humanity and his skills as a coach have shaped generations of athletes.
