The IBF refuses to sanction Jai Opetaia’s scheduled title defense against Brandon Glanton after it was confirmed that a Zuffa cruiserweight title is also on the line.

Undefeated cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia is apparently on the verge of losing his International Boxing Federation (IBF) world title. The federation announced that the planned fight against Brandon Glanton on Sunday in Las Vegas will not be sanctioned as an official IBF title fight.
The fight, which is being staged by Dana White’s new promotion Zuffa Boxing, was originally supposed to be an optional title defense for Opetaia. However, the Australian (29-0, 23 KOs) explained in an interview with Sporting News Australia yesterday that he had received an email from the IBF. It confirmed that he would not be allowed to defend the belt.
Confusion surrounding IBF World Championship
The situation already caused confusion in the run-up to the fight. During an initial face-off with Glanton, Opetaia only wore the belt from The Ring Magazine, while the IBF title was not present. At the official press event at the MGM Grand, however, the IBF belt lay demonstratively on the table in front of the champion.
The event will also focus on a newly introduced title from Zuffa Boxing. This inaugural Zuffa cruiserweight title is also due to be fought on March 8 – something the IBF apparently did not want to accept. The federation then released an official statement: “The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has withdrawn the sanctioning of the optional title defense of the IBF cruiserweight title between champion Jai Opetaia and 15th-ranked challenger Brandon Glanton, scheduled for March 8, 2026.”
The statement continues: “Today’s press conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (March 6) made it clear that the Zuffa World Cruiserweight Title will still be fought on March 8. The IBF reserves the right to co-sanction title fights with other federations provided they adhere to the same mandatory rules.” If the fight goes ahead as planned, Opetaia is likely to lose his IBF title. This is despite the fact that he remains unbeaten and is considered one of the most dominant cruiserweights in the world.
