Jai Opetaia returns to the domestic stage. The IBF cruiserweight world champion will fight David Nyika on Wednesday. The fight will take place at the Gold Coast Convention Center. For the 29-year-old from Queensland, it is an opportunity to show his fellow countrymen how much he has developed.

Opetaia: Champion with an impressive record

Opetaia has won four fights since winning the title in 2022. He last defeated Jack Massey in October. Prior to that, he secured victories against Jordan Thompson, Ellis Zorro and Mairis Briedis again. These successes make him the leading cruiserweight in the world. Now David Nyika, an unbeaten challenger from New Zealand, awaits.

David Nyika is a fighter with ambitions. The 29-year-old won Olympic bronze in 2020 and stopped nine of his ten opponents. “I think I can beat anyone,” said Nyika in the run-up to the fight. The fight against Opetaia is his chance to become world champion.

Rivalry between Australia and New Zealand

Nyika was signed as an opponent at short notice after Huseyin Cinkara had to pull out due to injury. The fight between the Australian and the New Zealander promises to be exciting. For Opetaia, it’s not just about winning. “Without success on the eighth, nothing counts,” he emphasized.

A win against Nyika could pave the way for Opetaia to bigger fights. He is aiming for title unifications against Chris Billam-Smith and Gilberto Ramirez. But first he wants to concentrate on the upcoming fight. “We fight smart and do our job,” said the champion.
