Former WBO world champion Joseph Parker is under massive pressure. According to British media reports, the New Zealand heavyweight has tested positive for cocaine in an anti-doping test.

British tabloid The Sun reported yesterday that Parker (36-4, 24 knockouts) had given a conspicuous sample during a routine VADA doping test on the day of the fight – Oct. 25. On the evening of the same day, Parker suffered an early defeat in his fight against Fabio Wardley by knockout in the 11th round.

Parker reacts with shock

Shortly after the news was released, Parker commented via his verified social media channels and was visibly surprised: “Before my last fight, I voluntarily gave a test and have now been informed that it gave an abnormal result. This is a real surprise for me.”

The ring veteran continued: “I have not taken any banned substances. I do not use performance-enhancing drugs and do not support their use. I am cooperating with the authorities and am confident that the investigation will clear my name. Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages of support. It means a lot to me and my family. When the investigation is complete, I will speak openly and answer any questions.”

Promoter Frank Warren confirms incident

Parker’s promoter Frank Warren (Queensberry Promotions) released a written statement: “The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) informed all relevant parties last night that a test conducted on October 25 on Joseph Parker in connection with his fight against Fabio Wardley returned an abnormal result. We will not comment further while the investigation is ongoing.”
