Jürgen Doberstein: Regio hero in the spotlight

Movie and Sportsman of the Year: Super middleweight Jürgen Doberstein has long been a household name in Saarland. On February 21, the “Doberman” will be back in the ring – and wants to further increase his popularity in the boxing business.

He is confident. In the ring. On the screen. On the gala stage. Someone who knows how to move everywhere. Especially in his home region of Saarland. Here he is something of a regional hero. Someone you know. Someone who fills pages in gazettes, gets minutes on the radio and appears on public television. At least in the southwest, the smallest state in Germany. We are talking about Jürgen Doberstein, the super middleweight world champion according to the “Global Boxing Council” (GBC) version. One of the small world associations, one based in Berlin.

What is striking is that few people in Germany have Doberstein on their radar. Wrongly so – because he doesn’t just have a game plan in the ring, his career steps follow a script – everything seems dramaturgically timed. Doberstein emphasizes to BOXSPORT that he doesn’t want to please anyone. “I just want to be me,” he says. Perhaps the recipe for success for a local hero who is also supported by top politicians in the state. But one thing at a time…
