Jaime Munguia dominates Armando Resendiz over twelve rounds and secures the WBA super middleweight title with a clear unanimous points victory.
Jaime Munguia is the new WBA super middleweight world champion! The Mexican (46-2, 35 knockouts) secured the title with a dominant unanimous points victory over reigning champion Armando Resendiz to become world champion in two weight classes. Resendiz (16-3, 11 knockouts) enjoyed only a brief reign as WBA titleholder after being promoted from interim to regular world champion in May with a surprise split-decision win over Caleb Plant. The official scorecards of the judges reflected Munguia’s clear superiority: 117-111, 119-109 and 120-108 secured the 29-year-old a clear victory on points.
Munguia dominated the fight from the start as an aggressive man in the ring. He found his rhythm early on with a precise jab and hard right body shots. After a strong start, he took complete control in the middle rounds. In round six he landed several uppercuts in the infight, while Resendiz could offer little more than a closed double guard. By the eleventh round, Munguia was firing combinations of right and left hands at the increasingly weakened champion.
In the twelfth and final round, Munguia finally looked for an early knockout, but Resendiz survived the final phase and saved himself. For Munguia, it is the first world title since his reign as WBO world champion at half-middleweight, which began in 2018 with a victory over Sadam Ali. Back then, he successfully defended his belt five times before moving up to middleweight two years later.
