Alexander Pavlov is the new WBF welterweight world champion. Pavlov (24-6, 18 knockouts) secured his belt after Dorde Krsmanovic was forced to retire due to injury in the third round of yesterday’s “Boxen im Norden” event at Grosse Freshet 36 in St. Pauli, Hamburg.

The ring doctors tried to reset the dislocated shoulder at the edge of the ring, but were unsuccessful, while Krsmanovic lay screaming on the canvas. The referee had no choice but to stop the fight. Pavlov thus celebrated his first title win since moving up to welterweight last year.

Krsmanovic (8-2-1, 4 knockouts) suffers a setback after two consecutive victories. The defeat in Hamburg is also his second fight in a row in Germany. The Bosnian had already suffered a T.K.O. defeat in round three against Alex Alselo in Stuttgart last December.

On the undercard, Fai Phannarai (19-0, 7 knockouts) secured the vacant WBF bantamweight title with an early stoppage win over Lena Venjacob (7-2, 6 knockouts) in round two. In the heavyweight division, England’s Steve Robinson (8-3, 5 knockouts) prevailed against Angelo Venjakob (8-5, 5 knockouts) after the referee stopped the fight in the eighth round. Former IBO world champion Sebastian Formella (27-3, 14 knockouts) also celebrated his comeback. After more than two years out of the ring, the former top contender returned and won by unanimous decision on points over eight rounds against Eduardo Reis (25-16, 19 knockouts) in the super welterweight division.

Probably the most entertaining fight of the evening was between lightweight Nenad Stancic (18-0, 8 knockouts) and the tough Venezuelan Yorky Medina (18-3, 15 knockouts). Stancic prevailed unanimously on points after eight rounds.
