Two days to go until the fight! AGON’s former world champion William Scull has been in Kolding since the beginning of the week, working with his coaching team on the final touches, both tactically and on the final kilos. On January 31, the Cuban-born fighter will step into the ring against the unbeaten Dane Jacob Bank in the Sydbank Arena. At stake is the WBO Global title, which Bank wants to defend in front of his home crowd.

For Scull, the fight is far more than just a comeback. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase my talent again,” explains the former world champion in the run-up to the fight. After his highly acclaimed performance in Riyadh against Canelo Alvarez, in which he lost his IBF World Championship belt, Scull reflects on the biggest fight of his career: “It was a great experience. Of course I was disappointed with the defeat, but I took it as constructive criticism that helped me in my development. A lot of people criticize me, but nobody criticizes Canelo, who couldn’t really hit me and put me in the ring. Good footwork is not the same as running away, even if some people who know little about boxing say it is.”

Scull is aware that the road back to the top is not an easy one. Fighting a young, unbeaten title holder in his home country is a deliberate risk. “I know he’s hungry and that the fight is at his home. But I’ve spent most of my career boxing away from home and I like these challenges,” says Scull. A build-up fight in familiar surroundings was therefore out of the question for him.

New impetus in the Scull team

The AGON professional has also provided new impetus in terms of personnel. Scull is working for the first time with Ernesto Aroche, the former coach of the Cuban national youth team, who most recently worked with the Spanish national team in Madrid. “He prepared me for this match and brings a new perspective and a lot of experience,” explains Scull about the collaboration.

Looking at the current situation in the super middleweight division after Canelo’s title loss, his elbow surgery and Terence Crawford’s career end, Scull sees his chances clearly ahead of him: “This weight class has always been strong. I’m ready to fight and fully focused on this fight. After a win, the next big opportunities will automatically come.”

Tomorrow, the obligatory weigh-in is on the agenda before he enters the ring in the Sydbank Arena on Saturday. His team colleague Carlos Castillo will also step into the ring on the undercard. The talented and unbeaten heavyweight will face Gianmarco Cardillo, who has only lost once in 15 fights. The fight between William Scull and Jacob Bank and the supporting program will be broadcast live on DAZN.
