APRIL, APRIL: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Felix Sturm are apparently on the verge of a spectacular duel in the light heavyweight division – and not in a show fight, but with sporting relevance. A fight for the WBA gold title, which Sturm recently won against Benjamin Blindert in Neu-Ulm, is on the cards.

According to media reports, concrete talks are taking place behind the scenes between Mayweather and AGON Sports. Ingo Volckmann, promoter and owner of the Spanish soccer stadium “Estadio Balear” in Palma de Mallorca, where the fight is to take place, is considered to be the driving force. The showdown between the two former world champions could take place there as early as September.

Undisputed champ as a prospect

Mayweather, who recently focused on lucrative show fights, is said to have been impressed by the staging of the Sturm comeback in Neu-Ulm. The professional environment and the media response were certainly appealing to the 48-year-old. The fact that the winner will be the mandatory challenger for Dmitriy Bivol makes the project particularly explosive in sporting terms.

There are also reports from the international matchmaking environment that the first draft agreements between the two sides are already being circulated. Official confirmation is still pending, but the topic has long been the subject of serious discussion within the industry.

It remains to be seen whether Mayweather will actually get involved in a fight of sporting significance again – especially against an opponent of the same age as the 46-year-old Sturm. But one thing is certain: if this duel does become a reality, it would be one of the most spectacular pairings in recent years – with real sensational potential.
