Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson are apparently set for a spectacular title duel in New York. A fight that could shape the start of 2026 in boxing.

Teofimo Lopez, reigning WBO light-welterweight champion, fueled speculation that he will next face WBC light-welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson. The possible superfight could take place as early as January 31 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
In an interview with “FightHype.com”, Lopez (22-1, 13 knockouts) was asked if the fight against Stevenson (24-0, 11 knockouts) was already officially set for January 21. His answer was telling. “If I confirmed that now, I’d be in trouble – and the fight would be off,” said Lopez with a grin. Shortly afterwards, the 28-year-old also spoke to “Fight Hub TV” and dropped another hint. “Just wait a few more weeks – maybe less,” Lopez said. “All I know is that a big gift awaits me in 2026.”
This cryptic statement has fueled speculation that the clash against Stevenson is already a done deal. DAZN commentator Chris Mannix also confirmed that the duel is virtually a done deal. “As far as I’ve heard, the deal is done. We’re getting Teofimo against Shakur in New York City – currently January 31 is the target date. When you get boxers of that class in the ring together, it’s a great thing.”
For Shakur Stevenson, the technically highly accomplished southpaw from Newark (USA), a win against Lopez would be another milestone. The 28-year-old could then become a four-time world champion – after winning the featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight titles. Stevenson recently defeated the Mexican William Zepeda on points.
Lopez, who defeated Arnold Barboza Jr. unanimously in his last title defense, also sees the duel as an opportunity to consolidate his supremacy in the semi-welterweight division.
