Terri Harper defends her WBO lightweight world title with a dominant points win over Natalie Zimmermann – first defeat for the brave Hamburg native in her title debut.
DONCASTER, ENGLAND – In an action-packed lightweight clash under floodlights, Terri Harper (16-2-2, 6 knockouts) secured a commanding points victory over previously unbeaten Hamburg native Natalie Zimmermann (13-1, 3 knockouts) at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster on Saturday night. The event was promoted by GBM Sports and broadcast live on DAZN.
The reigning WBO world champion Harper dictated the action from the first to the last round and left no doubt about her class. All three judges scored the fight unanimously 99-91 – a clear statement against a spirited but ultimately outclassed Zimmermann.
The 42-year-old German came forward boldly in her first world championship fight, but was hit by a hard right straight from Harper in the second round, which had an effect. Zimmermann also had to take heavy hits in the third round, which hinted at a premature end. However, the North German showed her fighting heart and bit her way through the rounds, even if she was badly marked in the later rounds – including a deep cut.
Harper, who beat Rhiannon Dixon last September to win world titles in three weight classes, once again showed her boxing class and routine. Especially in the eighth round, a stoppage again looked possible when she brought Zimmermann to the brink of a TKO defeat with precise combinations.
Zimmermann’s strongest moment came in round six, when she caused Harper some problems with constant pressure. But overall it was Harper’s pace, distance control and ring intelligence that made the difference. Despite all her exertions, Zimmermann fought bravely to the final bell and thus conceded her first defeat as a professional.
