Title clash on the horizon – Baraou vs. Zayas in Puerto Rico

Germany’s only reigning boxing world champion could soon be stepping onto the next big stage: According to US insider reports, Abass Baraou is close to an agreement with Xander Zayas for a spectacular unification fight in the light middleweight division. The possible date: January 31, 2026, the possible location: the traditional Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.

Everything has changed for the 30-year-old Baraou in 2025. Since his impressive victory over the unbeaten Yoenis Tellez and subsequent recognition as WBA world champion, the German has also gained international appeal. However, his dream of holding a major title fight in Oberhausen will have to wait for the time being. The stage is calling elsewhere – and it could hardly be bigger.

Because his potential opponent is none other than Xander Zayas, the Puerto Rican shooting star and current WBO world champion. With 22 wins in as many fights, the 22-year-old is the hottest prospect in the Caribbean. A home fight in San Juan would be one of the biggest boxing evenings Puerto Rico has seen in recent years. Official confirmation from both federations and promoters is still missing, but insiders such as ESPN reporter Mike Coppinger are already talking about an “agreement in principle”.
