World Boxing Cup: Shakhidov out, Klötzer victorious

Almost 400 boxers from 50 nations will compete at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil (April 20-26). The German Boxing Association (DBV) traveled to Foz do Iguaçu with two female boxers and six male boxers.

The 2026 World Boxing Cup in Brazil has attracted a record number of participants. A total of almost 400 boxers from 50 nations have registered for the tournament in Foz do Iguaçu, which will take place from April 20 to 26, 2026. It is the first World Boxing Cup this year and also the biggest tournament in the series to date.

Medals and world ranking points

The venue is the Rafain Palace Hotel & Convention Center, which hosted the event last year. Back then, Uzbekistan topped the medal table, while hosts Brazil came third with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

The medals will be awarded in a total of 20 weight categories, ten each for men and women. In addition to the placings, important points for the world rankings are also at stake. The preliminary fights will be held in two rings at the same time, while the semi-finals and finals will take place in one ring.

The German Boxing Association (DBV) has sent two female boxers and six male boxers to Brazil. Women: Maxi Klötzer (-51 kg) and Leonie Müller (-70 kg). Men: Ali El Sari (-55 kg), Mohamed Siala (-60 kg), Ousainou Hansen (-65 kg), Magomed Schachidov (-70 kg), Valerij Walter (-85 kg) and Nikta Putilov (+90 kg). The DBV team took part in a training camp in Brazil in preparation for the tournament. The German delegation will be led by Michael Müller, with head coach Humberto Horta Dominguez in charge of sports management.

Klötzer and El Sari in the round of 16

On Monday (April 20), DBV boxers Mohamed Siala and Magomed Schachidov were eliminated, while Maxi Klötzer secured the first German victory at the World Boxing Cup the following day. The Chemnitz-based boxer defeated the Brazilian Radija Gama on points to reach the last 16 of the tournament. Ali El Sari also prevailed in his weight class (-55 kg) against Max Tomines (Canada) and advanced to the round of 16.

DBV athletes Ousainou Hansen (-65 kg) and Nikita Putilov (+90 kg) also took to the ring last night. Hansen was defeated by Australian Jacob Cassar with 0:5 points. It was closer for Putilov: The German super heavyweight was narrowly beaten by Mücahit Ilyas from Turkey 2:3 WP.
