A sigh of relief from the German Boxing Association (DBV): Last night, Leonie Müller fought her way into the next round of the World Boxing Cup in Brazil (April 20-26). In the weight class up to 70 kilograms, the German defeated her Spanish opponent Dunia Martinez Mas with 5:0 points.

Klötzer and El Sari challenged today

Maxi Klötzer will also be back in the ring today. The Chemnitz native will face Feruza Kazakova from Uzbekistan, who won bronze at the 2025 World Championships, in the round of 16 (-51 kg). Also competing for the DBV: Ali El Sari, who will face Zhirayr Sargsyan from Armenia in the limit up to 55 kg.

The 2026 World Boxing Cup in Brazil has attracted a record number of participants. A total of almost 400 boxers from 50 nations have registered for the tournament in Foz do Iguaçu, which will take place from April 20 to 26, 2026. It is the first World Boxing Cup this year and also the biggest tournament in the series to date.

Medals and world ranking points

The venue is the Rafain Palace Hotel & Convention Center, which hosted the event last year. Back then, Uzbekistan topped the medal table, while hosts Brazil came third with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

The medals will be awarded in a total of 20 weight categories, ten each for men and women. In addition to the placings, important points for the world rankings are also at stake. The preliminary fights will be held in two rings at the same time, while the semi-finals and finals will take place in one ring.

Team of eight athletes

The DBV has sent two female boxers and six male boxers to Brazil. Women: Maxi Klötzer (-51 kg) and Leonie Müller (-70 kg). Men: Ali El Sari (-55 kg), Mohamed Siala (-60 kg), Ousainou Hansen (-65 kg), Magomed Schachidov (-70 kg), Valerij Walter (-85 kg) and Nikta Putilov (+90 kg). The DBV team took part in a training camp in Brazil in preparation for the tournament. The German delegation will be led by Michael Müller, with head coach Humberto Horta Dominguez in charge of sports management.
