Deontay Wilder announces ring return

Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 knockouts) is back – and wants to know it again! The former WBC heavyweight champion will return to the ring on June 27 in Wichita (Kansas) against Tyrell Anthony Herndon (24-5, 15 knockouts). The fight is scheduled for ten rounds and will take place in the Charles Koch Arena. Wilder, now 39 years old, does not want to call the encounter a “comeback”, but rather a new beginning: after shoulder problems and two operations, the knockout artist from Alabama feels pain-free again for the first time in years – and has announced an explosive comeback.

“They used to call me Windmill Wilder – and now I’ve got that Windmill back!” Wilder told the boxing portal BoxingScene. “Anyone who knows anything about shoulder injuries knows that it’s one of the longest recoveries. And every time I lifted my arm or threw with my right hand or wiped my butt, my arm and shoulder hurt. I was in pain 24 hours a day, but I still tried to lead a normal life.” He suffered from constant pain for years and even simple everyday activities had become a torture. Now he is fully back. Not only physically but also mentally.

His next opponent Tyrell Anthony Herndon, a solid puncher from Texas, is regarded as the clear underdog. For Wilder, the fight is a first step back into the limelight. And anyone who knows Wilder knows that when he talks about “returning with a bang”, he means it literally.
