The next IBF heavyweight world champion could be decided soon—Sanchez and Itauma are set to fight for the vacant title.
The IBF has officially ordered Frank Sanchez and Moses Itauma to fight for the vacant heavyweight world title. Following Oleksandr Usyk’s relinquishment of the title, both teams have now been given until July 29 to reach an agreement on the fight.
Sanchez, the No. 1 contender in the IBF rankings, most recently impressed with a spectacular knockout victory over Richard Torrez Jr. Itauma, currently ranked third, is considered one of the world’s top heavyweight prospects and is actually already scheduled to face Filip Hrgovic on August 29. It remains to be seen whether that fight will go ahead as planned or be canceled in favor of the world title bout.
The IBF also bid a warm farewell to former champion Oleksandr Usyk: “Throughout his extraordinary career, Usyk has established himself as one of the best boxers of his generation. His pursuit of excellence will inspire future generations.” If Sanchez and Itauma fail to reach an agreement by the end of July, the IBF is likely to auction off the hosting rights through a purse bid.
