Our knockout of the week this week comes from Emiliano Vargas, who sent Alexander Espinoza to the mat in round one at Madison Square Garden at the weekend.

Emiliano Vargas impressively proved on Saturday evening in Madison Square Garden why he is considered one of the most exciting young boxers in the USA. The 21-year-old son of former world champion Fernando Vargas knocked out the experienced Alexander Espinoza from Ecuador after just 42 seconds of the first round with a perfectly timed right hand. Referee Ricky Gonzalez stopped the fight immediately after Espinoza went down again when he got up. For Vargas, it was his 15th professional victory in his 15th fight and his 13th knockout – a rate of 87 percent. “Espinoza was the most experienced opponent of my career,” said Vargas after the fight. “I was ready for 15 rounds, but they don’t pay me for overtime. I’m ready for the elite.”
With this explosive victory on the Zayas-Garcia card, Vargas underlined his ambitions to fight for bigger titles in the light-welterweight division in the near future. Espinoza, meanwhile, suffered his third career knockout defeat.
