The sporting heights have quickly turned into a bitter setback: Nina Meinke has once again been thwarted by back problems following her latest World Championship success. The Berlin featherweight, who was crowned IBF and IBO double world champion in Hamburg in March, has now reported back from hospital with the news that she had to undergo another operation.

According to the 33-year-old, it is another severe slipped disc, again in the same place as her first operation last year. Back then, she had massive problems after a fight, her right leg was partially numb and normal walking was barely possible. This was followed by a month-long break. So now the next cut – at a time when her sporting and personal fortunes were looking up.

Just a few days ago, Meinke opened her own boxing club in Berlin, surrounded by numerous well-known faces from the German boxing scene. She had previously put herself in an outstanding position on a sporting level with her victory over Dyana Vargas. However, the physically demanding twelve-round fight seems to have put a strain on her back again.

Meinke emphasized that the operation had been successful. Now it’s all about rest, regeneration and concentrating fully on his health. There are no plans for the future for the time being. Instead of possible big fights, the focus is now on full recovery.
