On October 14, 1995, German boxing writes another chapter in its golden era: Henry Maske and Graciano Rocchigiani, two of the biggest names of their time, face each other for the second time in Munich’s Olympic Hall. It was the quintessential German-German showdown – a duel between gentleman and bad boy, between East and West, between style and anger.

The fight back for honor

The first clash on May 27, 1995 in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle was already a national event. Under the motto “A question of honor”, IBF world champion Henry Maske defends his title on points against the fierce challenger Graciano Rocchigiani – albeit in a highly controversial manner. Many fans and experts see the Berlin fighter in the lead, putting the champion under pressure for long stretches. Rocchigiani speaks openly of cheating.

Maske, otherwise known as a tactically superior technician, appears unusually nervous in Dortmund. “I’m definitely not performing as well as I expect of myself,” he says later in retrospect. It is the desire to make amends that ultimately leads the gentleman from Frankfurt (Oder) to opt for a direct rematch with Rocchigiani instead of a mandatory defense against the Jamaican Duran Williams.

A battle that electrifies Germany

When the rivals once again step into the ring in October 1995, the tension is palpable. The Olympic Hall is completely sold out and millions watch the spectacle live on television. With 17 million viewers, “Maske vs. Rocky II” achieves ratings that today’s boxing events can only dream of – a record that perfectly reflects the boxing boom of the 1990s in Germany.

Maske has come to stand for precision, discipline and sporting elegance – the “gentleman in the ring”. Rocchigiani, on the other hand, embodies the unpolished opposite: edgy, unpredictable, passionate – the “bad boy” of German boxing. Their contrast fascinates the masses.

Mask in top form – Rocchigiani without an answer

In contrast to the first duel, Maske controls the action from the start this time. He is more agile, counters precisely with his jab and hardly gives Rocchigiani any room to find his rhythm. Maske increases his dominance round by round. “I can feel that my concept is working and that Graciano is gradually becoming more tired and slower,” says Maske in retrospect. “I’m very focused in the rematch and know exactly what to expect.”

After twelve clear rounds, the judges decide unanimously in favor of the champion. Henry Maske defends his IBF world title for the eighth time and finally cements his reputation as a symbol of the German boxing boom. Despite the defeat, Rocchigiani retains his status as a cult figure – controversial, authentic, uncompromising.

A duel with legendary status

The rematch between Maske and Rocchigiani is already considered one of the most important fights in German boxing history. It was more than just a sporting contest – it was a cultural event that moved millions and catapulted boxing into the mainstream in Germany for good.

Maske remained world champion until his retirement in 1996 and became a symbol of fair sport. Rocchigiani, on the other hand, remained the uncomfortable fighter who never took the easy way out. Together they write a piece of German sporting history on October 14, 1995.

“Mask vs. Rocky II” – this is more than just a rematch. It is the culmination of a rivalry that captivates an entire nation.
