According to consistent media reports, the long-awaited heavyweight bout between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is expected to take place in New York. This dashes the hopes of many British fans for a match at London’s Wembley Stadium. For a long time, a fight in England was considered the ideal solution. However, the plans apparently fell through due to the organizers’ requirements. In order to best serve the U.S. market, the main event was supposed to start around 2 a.m. local time—a scenario that could not be accommodated at Wembley Stadium.
Both Joshua and Fury have now completed their scheduled warm-up fights. Joshua initially had to weather two knockdowns against Kristian Prenga, but went on to win in spectacular fashion by knockout in the second round. Fury prevailed over the experienced Mariusz Wach in Thailand the day before after seven rounds.
Boxing fans have been waiting for years for these two British heavyweights to face off. As early as 2020, the fight seemed within reach, but contract clauses and subsequent losses to Oleksandr Usyk repeatedly derailed those plans. Now, all signs point to Joshua and Fury finally facing off in November—though likely on American soil rather than in front of a home crowd.
