WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza once again made a statement in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The unbeaten champion dismantled Arnold Khegai over eleven one-sided rounds before the latter’s corner threw in the towel and secured victory by T.K.O. for the Mexican crowd favorite.

Espinoza dictated the action in the “Arena Potosí” from the start, using his reach, his timing and his high frequency of punches to systematically tear Khegai apart. Although the Ukrainian tried to counter with deep dodges and occasional overhand rights, Espinoza’s offensive drive did not let up.

Incisive moment in round 7

An unintentional headbutt in round seven opened a laceration over Khegai’s left eye, which was already visibly swelling. Espinoza followed up, landing precise uppercuts from a distance and stepping up the pressure. Khegai’s eye became increasingly swollen – a clear indication that the fight was about to be stopped.

After a tough tenth round, Khegai’s corner finally decided to take their protégé out of the fight just seconds after the start of the eleventh round and threw in the towel. With the win, Espinoza improves his record to 28-0 (24 knockouts) and hands Khegai (23-3-1, 14 knockouts) his first early loss in ten years.

Espinoza: “I wanted to put on a show for the fans”

After the fight, the world champion was satisfied: “I’m happy because I got the result I expected – the win. I could have stayed at a distance all night, but I wanted to give the people a show.”

Espinoza continues: “I know that nobody has stopped Khegai before. I am the first. He is a strong fighter, but today I showed that I am better. I still feel good in this weight class. Before I make a decision, I want to see what offers are on the table.”

The win marked Espinoza’s fourth title defense since his upset victory over Robeisy Ramirez – all by knockout. The Mexican impressively underlined his claim as one of the most dangerous punchers in the featherweight division.
